Patients are usually referred by their general practitioner or another specialist, but self referrals are also accepted.

Common reasons for referral include :

  • Dyspepsia (indigestion) including reflux, swallowing problems and non-cardiac chest pains
  • Weight loss
  • Anaemia
  • Coeliac disease, malabsorbtion of nutrients
  • Abdominal pain
  • Change of bowel habit +/- bleeding per rectum
  • Bowel evacuation problems or anal irritation
  • IBS / Food sensitivities and intolerances
  • Screening for a family history of bowel or stomach cancer
  • Disorders of the pancreas
  • Nutritional problems, mouth problems, halitosis
  • Abnormal Liver tests (ALT, GGT, Bilirubin and Alkaline Phosphatase)
  • Assessment of liver disease (including non-invasive techniques)
  • Jaundice
  • Gallstones
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Hepatitis B or C infection
  • Liver (and general health) problems in association with alcohol misuse
  • Liver drug reactions
  • Autoimmune liver disease
  • Abnormal ultrasound or CT scan of the liver / biliary tract
  • Assessment and monitoring of advanced liver disease, including complications
  • Liver disorders in connection with other medical problems
